Following My Heart to an Abandoned Shipwreck | A Conscious Photographer's Adventure

March 14, 2024

As a conscious photographer and visual storyteller based in the Northern Rivers, Byron Bay — I believe following your heart is the greatest creative compass. Every frame I capture, whether it's a sacred ceremony, an ecstatic dance floor, or an abandoned relic of the past, begins with that same inner call. This is one of those stories.

The Groove Cruise — where it all began

The weather is perfect as I take one last look back at the Carnival Victory before heading off to explore the tropical Grand Turk Island - The capital of Turks and Caicos Islands

I find myself walking up the stairs to the breakfast buffet, ever so slightly exhausted from the night before. "Luckily I had a good sleep," I thought, remembering all the ecstatic moments of connection and joy.

It had been a few days of dancing since boarding The Groove Cruisea 96 hour electronic rave on a cruise ship, sailing from the port of Miami all the way to Turks Island and back.

I feel excitement for the day ahead, though I am ready to fill my belly with as much food as I can handle.

I arrive at the top of the stairs. "Ahh, we made it! We're on land now," I say to myself as I scan the horizon from way above the ocean on the top deck of the outrageously large ship I'd grown accustomed to over the past two days.

That's when I spot an abandoned beauty washed up on the sandy shoreline — calling out to me.

The sign that almost stopped me

Smashing down my food with my inner explorer ready to burst out of me, I grab my camera bag and start walking towards the beach.

There was an entire beach party with a full blown stage setup, drinks and everything in between — but my soul was calling me elsewhere. With my sights set on the distance, off I went.

A few friends I'd made aboard joined me — until we came to a sign.

"Warning! Do not enter! Port of Turks and Caicos Island"

Me and my 3 friends stop in our tracks. "Ahh damn what a bummer! We can't go on!.."
Well that was my first thought at least. For a moment I consider allowing a sign dictate how I live my life. Unconsciously allowing groupthink to influence my decisions,...

That was until I notice another guy from our ship, all on his own walk straight past this "warning" sign - unfazed.
Leaving my small group - I slip-line behind the path of energy this lone guy made, and I walk straight into the unknown.

Meeting Tatiana & boarding the ship

Approaching the ship, I met Tatiana — a fellow creative and model from Atlanta, equally drawn toward the wreck. "I want to capture some photos for my Instagram," she exclaimed. After forming a connection, we agreed to explore together and see what magic we could capture.

As we got closer, I noticed more people from the cruise had made their way here too — people who hadn't allowed fear to hold them back. Some adventurers had already made it up onto the ship. I felt my being expanding into a different world.

My heart was aching to get inside somehow. Searching for a way in, it seemed the only entry was through the back — facing the ocean. I'm not the strongest swimmer. I hate the water. Plus I had my camera bag that I couldn't get wet.

With my mind scrambling for a solution, I remembered the people up top and shouted out:

"Bro! Is there a rope up there? I need to get my bag up!"

The kind soul above threw me down something — not really a rope, but I quickly decided to go ahead anyway.

I carefully tied my camera bag onto the makeshift line, putting my full faith into a stranger I'd just met on top of an abandoned ship. "It's all good, man!" he exclaimed.

Running around the back I started doggy-paddling through the tropical ocean. I struggled, but slowly got there with the waves pushing me around. I climbed up over the barnacle-lined loading bay, where the waves had endlessly slammed against the corroding steel.

What abandoned places teach us

Aboard the ship, I stood in awe over the beauty that had presented itself to me. Bright orange iron oxide had penetrated what was once painted fresh white. I personally find such beauty in abandoned places that I haven't really found anywhere else in this modern world we live in.

An energy of excitement and passion built within me, and with my camera in hand, I witnessed myself stepping into a completely different version of myself. With my soul's purpose running through my veins, Tatiana and I eagerly explored the different parts of the ship — capturing what I can only describe as pure magic, with the universe guiding us together to collaborate on one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

The images that came from that day showed me that my heart's desires have the fullest potential to be manifested in the physical. I had imagined an experience like this a whole year prior — and this surpassed my wildest dreams.

Soul-led Conscious Photographer — Always Present

This is why I do what I do. Whether I'm behind the lens at a sacred ceremony in the Northern Rivers, capturing raw expression on the dance floor at an ecstatic dance event in Byron Bay, or doggy-paddling toward an abandoned shipwreck in the Caribbean — I show up fully, camera in hand, soul-led and present.

If this resonates with you and you're looking for a conscious photographer or videographer to document your next high vibe conscious event, alternative healing gathering, or sacred ceremony in the Northern Rivers — let's collaborate.
