As a conscious event photographer, Gold Coast's Truth Serum 2026 was one of the more unique and intimate events Down To Earth Media has had the pleasure of capturing. An intimate crowd gathered in a quaint backyard in Surfers Paradise — hoping to catch a laugh from Canadian comedian and freedom-loving truth teller Alex Lasarev, aka Alex The Comic.
Truth Serum is a special co-creation by locals Clinton Kaye and Ranald McMaster, featuring a conscious stand-up comedy performance and immersive Comedy Therapy experience. Alex has been using humour as a powerful healing tool since he began stand-up in the late 90s. What started as personal catharsis evolved into a unique methodology that helps others reconnect with the funny side of their own lives — as a pathway to deeper self-love, shadow integration and authentic communication.

I was pleasantly surprised witnessing a gathering like this on the footsteps of Surfers Paradise, with the Q1 tower towering right behind the quaint backyard where a conscious community formed. A community coming to see the blend of humour, healing and authentic human connection facilitated by Alex the Comic. Alex Lasarev has spent over 25 years mastering comedy as a genuine healing modality — effortlessly weaving shadow integration, self-love and authentic human communication into performances that leave audiences not only laughing, but genuinely transformed. Truth Serum is the living embodiment of that philosophy.

I had arrived at the Surfers Paradise backyard just as the sun was setting — dressed up to fit in with the Gold Coast crowd, ready to mingle. Knocking on the door, I was warmly invited by fellow Kiwi brother Clinton Kaye, With his Māori English accent bringing my roots back home to the Long White Cloud of Aotearoa, Aka New Zealand. Arriving fresh into the space, not knowing anyone meant I was free to capture every genuine moment of connection and laughter, all while forming new connections. As a conscious event photographer, Gold Coast gatherings like this are what lights me up.
There is definitely something powerful about an barebones, intimate backyard gathering. No big stage above the audience, no flashy production — just a comedian sharing his stories forged into magic to a crowd lapping up the raw truth of human experience. As a conscious event photographer, Gold Coast events of this calibre are rare and profoundly special to document.
The connection Alex the Comic formed between the audience at Truth Serum 2026 was a joy to witness. Alex's key was being able to hold deep presence and connect with each person within the crowd, testing the field and seeing how each dimension of his relaying experience's laced with humour was received along the way.
As I left this event, I was able to reflect apon how this event in particular, Is a deep reflection on how the shift in consciousness is occurring in society. How nestled within the busyness and flashy (and what I assumed - Superficial) rat race of Surfers Paradise, there are more and more people craving real connection, real laughter and real healing — away from the noise of mainstream entertainment. As a conscious event photographer, Gold Coast is clearly becoming a hub for these kinds of transformational experiences and I'm stoked to say, Down To Earth Media is here to capture every moment of it.
